About the event

ART OPENING — FAUSTO FERNANDEZ | THE ESSENCE OF RESILIENCE
Fausto Fernandez's work spans a range of media, including paintings, public art, and community engagement projects. He combines traditional painting techniques with photography and found objects, creating complex and layered compositions.

Fernandez is a longtime supporter of the gallery and a pillar in this community. This April, he suffered a severe stroke. After a week in the ICU, and more time spent in in-patient rehabilitation, he is now home. While his long-term prognosis remains positive, and he has made huge strides in his recovery, he still has a long road ahead of him with both physical and speech therapy. Realistically, it could still be 6 to 12 months before Fausto is able to fully do the things he does best, make beautiful art and independently sell his work to make a living and pay his bills.

As our final exhibition on McKinley, we have opened our space to host this special fundraising exhibition to support our friend, everyone's friend, Fausto. Funds raised will go toward covering his living expenses and medical bills. Even with insurance, his medical expenses are likely to be overwhelming.

Born in El Paso, Texas, and raised in Ciudad Juárez, Chihuahua, Mexico, Fausto Fernandez is a mixed media collage artist now based in Phoenix, Arizona. His diverse background includes time spent in Anthony, New Mexico, and Los Angeles, California.

His paintings are characterized by the interplay of identifiable subjects and abstract elements, serving as metaphors for human interaction and behavior. The themes in his art are deeply rooted in his upbringing and extend into explorations of community, culture, and societal dynamics. He frequently works in series, drawing inspiration from mathematics, technology, cultural preservation, and mythology.

Fernandez's works are in the permanent collections of prominent institutions such as McNay Museum of Art, San Antonio; Tucson Museum of Art, Arizona; Phoenix Art Museum; Heard Museum, Phoenix; Stanlee and Gerald Rubin Center for the Visual Arts, University of Texas at El Paso; Sky Harbor Airport Museum, Phoenix; and City of El Paso Museum and Cultural Affairs Department. His work has been exhibited in solo and group shows at Gate Cultural Center, San Pedro, California; Akron Museum, Ohio; Mesa Contemporary Arts Museum, Arizona; Tempe Center for the Arts, Arizona; Smithsonian’s George Gustav Heye Center, New York; and Art Gallery of Ontario, Toronto, Canada. His 10,000-square-foot terrazzo floor design at Phoenix Sky Harbor Airport's Sky Train Station is seen by thousands of travellers annually.
